Prof. Shuguang Yuan obtained his Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Structural Biology from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 2009. He subsequently pursued his doctoral studies under the prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship, conducting research across three leading European institutions: École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland), the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland), and KU Leuven University (Belgium).
His doctoral research focused on elucidating the molecular principles underlying various biological systems, including enzymes, kinases, ion channels, transporters, and, in particular, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). In June 2013, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy with the distinction of an Outstanding Dissertation. Following this, he was granted the Marie Curie ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship.
In 2014, Prof. Yuan proposed a theoretical model describing the activation mechanism and continuous water channel of GPCRs, published in Nature Communications (2014). This work has been widely recognized and has significantly influenced the field of GPCR research. From 2014 to 2019, Prof. Yuan worked at Idorsia Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (formerly Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd.) in Basel, Switzerland, as a specialist in Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD). During his tenure, he contributed to the design and advancement of novel therapeutic compounds against GPCRs, two of which have successfully progressed to clinical trials.
In recognition of his scientific achievements, Prof. Yuan was appointed Affiliate Professor at the University of Warsaw in 2018. In 2022, he was included among the top 2% of scientists worldwide, according to global citation metrics. In 2025, under Prof. Yuan’s leadership, the first-in-class modulator AM-001 of the MRGPRX2 receptor was approved by both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Chinese Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE) for clinical trials. The product is now in phase 1b for the proof-of-concept clinical study.
